DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING

Millions of people get to see a movie when it’s distributed around the world. Nonetheless, a whole group of people do not really have a choice when deciding what to see in theatres or on the small screen: the deaf and hard of hearing. Those with normal hearing may choose between a dubbed or a subtitled version, while for the deaf and hard of hearing the choice is limited to subtitles only.

Having access to a captioned film is not easy in theatres and it is even harder on TV. Subtitling is highly appreciated by people with normal hearing wishing to gain knowledge and learn as much as possible from viewing the film, but for the deaf and hard of hearing subtitles are an indispensable tool for understanding and enjoying the experience. Also, it is only through subtitles that they may increase their language comprehension and cultural knowledge.
